Introduction

Hello, and welcome back NEO Homeschoolers! If you've been around for a while, you probably remember my post about co-ops in the northeast Ohio area... if not, click here to check that out. Well, I got so much feedback on that post, I decided I needed to update it to include all of the additional co-ops I was told exist for homeschoolers in northeast Ohio. First though, let's take a look at what a homeschool co-op is and several key features that can be found in most co-ops.

What is a Co-Op?

For those who are new to homeschooling, a co-op is a group of homeschooling families who come together to share in educational responsibilities, resources, and social opportunities. Cooperatives range from casual, parent-led gatherings to structured programs with hired teachers and formal curricula. No matter how structured or casual the co-op, all homeschool co-ops provide families with a needed sense of community and support, as well as sharing some key features.

Key Homeschool Co-Op Features

  1. Shared teaching: Parents in a homeschool co-op often take turns teaching various subjects based on each parent's unique expertise.
  2. Regular Meet-Ups: Co-ops may meet weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly in homes, churches, or community centers.
  3. Structured or flexible: As stated above, some co-ops are going to be more casual while other co-ops will be more structured. The more casual co-ops may focus more on enrichment activities such as science experiments and field trips, whereas the more structured co-ops are likely to have a heavier emphasis on a set curriculum.
  4. Socialization: All co-ops provide homeschool children with the chance to engage with and learn from peers through group learning and teamwork opportunities.
  5. Cost-Sharing: Families in a co-op may pool their resources to afford things such as guest instructors, materials, and/or facility rentals.
