Mother's Day Crafts & Activities for Homeschool Kids

If you've got crafty kiddos, then this is your section! Below, I've put together a list of 20 easy Mother's Day crafts and activities kids can put together and/or plan to make their mama feel special and loved.

Crafts

  1. Handprint Flower Bouquet: Perfect for preschool and elementary kids, this craft is a classic Mother's Day keepsake that many mamas treasure for the rest of their lives.
  2. "All About Mom" Printable Page: A quick keepsake, this Mother's Day craft is always a favorite. Designed kind of like MadLibs, the page comes with fill in the blanks about the child's mom. Answers, especially from younger kids, can often be quite memorable!
  3. Painted Flower Pots: For the gardening mama, a painted flower pot is a reusable keepsake that will forever remind them of their baby. The best part is that flower pots are often reasonably inexpensive. I recommend using acrylic paint on terra-cotta pots and adding some soil and seeds for added beauty.
  4. Thumbprint Heart Mug: Does the mama in your life drink coffee or tea? A thumbprint heart mug could make a perfect, treasured keepsake. Get some acrylic paint and dollar store, ceramic, white mugs and allow the kids to get creative painting a mug for mom to use each morning for her coffee or tea.
  5. Homemade Bath Salts: Because what busy, homeschool mama doesn't need a soothing break? Find out mom's favorite essential oil scent and mix a few drops of that scent with some Epsom salt and baking soda for a relaxing bath experience.
  6. Paper Rose Bouquet: Got colorful paper lying around? Most homeschool households do! Select a few colors of paper and twist them into a bouquet of roses, attaching green, pipe cleaner stems and tying a pretty ribbon around the stems to finish a beautiful Mother's Day bouquet that will never wilt or die.
  7. Watercolor "Mom" Art: Do your kiddos enjoy painting? Give them the opportunity to paint and create a cute craft for Mother's Day by writing "Mom" and/or a sweet, little message in the center of their painting using a white crayon.
  8. Coupon Book for Mom: A great craft for older kids, coupon book creation gives kids the chance to get creative in what things they'd like to do for mom. Allow the kids to brainstorm ideas for the coupons and then get some writing practice in by creating coupons for things such as, "Dishes Done for a Week," or "Quiet Reading Time Together."
  9. Decorated Wooden Spoons: Definitely a supervised activity, kids can help dad use a wood-burning pen, or just use paint to decorate some wooden spoons for mom to add a little pop of color to her kitchen utensils drawer and remind her of her littles each time she goes to use one of those wooden spoons.
  10. Pressed Flower Bookmarks: Get outside and enjoy some gorgeous, spring weather while helping the kids collect some colorful flowers to press and laminate or contact paper into bookmarks.

Activities

  1. Mother's Day Morning Basket: Include things such as a picture book about moms, poetry or Scripture on gratitude, a simple craft, and/or a treat for mom. Have the kids present the basket to mom as a special way to start the day.
  2. Kids-Teach-the-Lesson Day: If you have mini teachers at home, this might be the Mother's Day activity for your family. Allow your kids some creative freedom as they choose the subject and put together a "lesson plan" to teach mom on Mother's Day.
  3. Nature Walk + "Why We Love Mom" Scavenger Hunt: Head outdoors and enjoy a family walk as the kids search for items in nature that they believe represent their mom (e.g., something strong, something beautiful, something comforting, etc.). For younger kids, you might help them come up with a list of items to search for beforehand.
  4. Mother's Day Tea Party: Get the kids involved in setting up a Mother's Day tea party. Have them help put together a menu of fun snacks and wrap some small gifts or choose some Scripture or poetry to read. Then, set the table and enjoy some quality family time over tea - or your family's drink of choice - snacks, and simple gifts for mom. This idea is perfect for multi-generational families because everyone can be included.
  5. Interview Mom: Another opportunity for kids to get creative with their gift, an interview of mom allows kids the chance to get to know their mom. Have the kids come up with questions on their own, or help them if you have younger kiddos at home. Then, spend some time getting to know mom better. Questions you might include are: "What did you want to be when you grew up?" "What's your favorite thing about being a mom?" "What was your favorite subject in school?" etc.
  6. Family Gratitude Jar: A great activity to do as a family, a gratitude jar gives kids the opportunity to practice being grateful as well as expressing their love for mom. Get everyone together and go around sharing things you appreciate about mom. Collect all the gratitude notes in a jar and then present it to mom on Mother's Day.
  7. "Let Mom Rest" Hour: Because what mom doesn't enjoy an hour of being able to rest and indulge in herself? This activity promotes independence and responsibility in kids because it encourages them to choose their own independent, quiet activity to do while mom takes an hour for herself. If you have a mix of ages, encourage the older kids to pair up with the younger ones and work together on an activity with the older child taking the lead or, being the teacher.
  8. Mother's Day Photoshoot: Have an aspiring photographer? This is a great activity for them to practice their skill! Allow your aspiring photographer to take the lead in designing a photoshoot for Mother's Day, complete with outfits, decor, and backgrounds.
  9. Make Mom's Favorite Meal: Great for aspiring chefs or just getting the kids in the kitchen, this activity can also be used as a homeschool lesson in life skills. Give the kids freedom to choose what meal they want to make and then, help them create a budget and shopping list for their meal. Take them to the grocery store and demonstrate how to do some simple price comparisons or how to search out the best deals. For older kids - i.e., middle/high school ages - allow them to take this task on by themselves, maybe partnering up with a younger sibling and being the teacher. Help the kids prepare the meal - Again, older kids can do this on their own with minimal supervision. - and enjoy some quality conversation around mom's favorite meal.
  10. Create a Family Tradition: If you have a younger family with smaller kids, Mother's Day could be the perfect opportunity to institute a new family tradition... can be done with older kids too. Traditions such as planting flowers, making a craft, visiting a favorite local spot, or reading a special book together can help make Mother's Day special for everyone.

This post took a while to complete, but I'm hoping y'all got some inspiration from it. I enjoy doing posts like this because I know I'm helping other homeschool families celebrate their mama bear - or papa bear on Father's Day - who gives so much. It's also fun to do the research and find these ideas... maybe that's just me though, hehe. Anyway, happy Mother's Day to all of my fellow NE Ohio homeschool moms out there! I hope your day is extra special and sweet, full of sweet memories with your littles. I'll see y'all soon!
