NEO Homeschool Spotlight: The Great Lakes Science Center
Hello and welcome back, NEO Homeschoolers! Do you have a kiddo with a love for science? Maybe you have a kiddo who learns best through hands-on experiences. I believe my daughter is like that. Or perhaps your kiddos just have a love for exploring while they learn. This week, I want to highlight a resource in NE Ohio that caters to all those learning styles. Here in NE Ohio, we have a plethora of amazing resources for kiddos who learn best through hands-on or exploration and this week, I'm taking a deep dive into the Great Lakes Science Center and what they have to offer homeschoolers in NE Ohio. Ready? Let's go!
Located at 601 Erieside Ave. in Cleveland, OH, the Great Lakes Science Center is a valuable educational hub for students of all ages. With hands-on exhibits such as "Handle With Care" and "Environmental Dashboard" plus the Cleveland Clinic Dome Theater, summer camps (e.g., Camp Curiosity - see my post, "Summer Camps in NE Ohio," linked here), and events such as the "Design & Build Challenge," the Great Lakes Science Center offers numerous ways for homeschool kids to engage with science in fun and interactive ways.
One of the more popular exhibits is the NASA Glenn Visitor Center where kids and adults alike can explore the ins and outs of being an astronaut through exhibits such as the "Living in Space Gallery." Curious about how astronauts use the bathroom or what a day in outer space is like? "Living in Space" will give you a glimpse into just that. Or, if the Apollo mission is a topic of interest, check out the "Apollo Command Module" where curious explorers can see what the inside of Apollo looked like and learn more about the 26.5 million mile journey the space shuttle took. The NASA Glenn Visitor Center also has a gallery featuring artifacts that offer a glimpse into human space travel, past, present, and future.
Another exhibit of interest, Steamship William G. Mather is now open for exploration and tours. Built in 1925, this 618-foot ship helped to transform Cleveland into an industrial center, and has been restored so that people can explore the interior of the ship from the 4-story engine room to the huge cargo holds and everything in between. Guests can choose to explore the ship on their own or schedule a guided, hard-hat tour, available on select Saturdays and Sundays.
Cleveland's Great Lakes Science Center has something for everyone. There is no question why it is such a valuable educational hub! It's not just a museum, it's a hands-on learning environment that encourages creativity and curiosity, both of which are often key aspects of a homeschool setup. Whether your kiddos want to explore outer space, experiment with engineering, or explore a steamship, the Great Lakes Science Center has an exhibit that will satisfy that curiosity.
